NFU 2 Hyde FC 0 (FAT 2)

FA Trophy Second Round
North Ferriby United   2
Tom Denton 81; Ryan Kendall 90

Hyde FC 0

North Ferriby certainly deserved to win this game but they were made to work hard by a spirited and determined Hyde side.

It was an entertaining game played in a relentless wind that blew from end of the pitch throughout the game. This, obviously made it difficult for the players to judge the movement of the ball at times. Defending, in particular, was not always easy.

The opening 10 minutes were fairly end-to-end with Hyde having the wind behind them. Hyde keeper Ashley Timms did well to quickly change direction save Ryan Kendall’s deflected shot after five minutes.

Hyde responded with a Tom Bentham shot that went wide before Luke Giverin hit a cross-shot that was palmed away by Ferriby keeper Adam Nicklin.

From then on, Ferriby began to gain control of the game and created numerous goal-scoring opportunities. Hyde were largely limited to quick breaks with Louis Almond frequently prominent in them. The normally dangerous Connor Hughes was barely given a look-in by Ferriby’s young defender Louis Bruce.

Following a couple of half-chances Ferriby really should have taken the lead after 14 minutes. Kendall and Jason St Juste got a little tangled up before St Juste finally got in a shot that Timms blocked with his legs.

As the half progressed, Kendall saw a shot blocked and a Tom Denton shot was deflected wide. Timms saved a Gregg Anderson header before punching the ball off the head of the incoming Mark Gray.

Hyde were defending stubbornly but they did have their moments going forward. Darcy O’Connor headed wide, Danny Racchi had a shot blocked by Anderson and Nicklin pushed away a corner from under his bar.

The second-half was nearly all Ferriby as they played with the wind behind them. They mixed up their approach play attacking down the wings at times and sometimes using long balls aimed at Denton.

Just as in the first-half, Hyde defended doggedly and, at times, rode their luck.

The half opened with Timms doing well to make a diving save from a Denton header following a long-throw from Bruce and watching a Liam King shot go narrowly wide. Timms then had to make another save from Kendall and Anderson headed over from the resulting corner.

Russell Fry’s well-flighted free-kick beat everybody and slipped past the far post when the slightest of touches wouls have resulted in a goal.

It was midway through the half before Hyde offered any real threat. Hughes shot was turned round by Nicklin and from the corner a shot was blocked by Ferriby’s defence.

King, Denton and Peat all went close to scoring. Mark gray was particularly unlucky after 73 minutes, His header hit Timms and from the rebound he shot against a defender.

With 10 minutes left it looked as though the tie was heading for a replay. However, there is no end to the spirit in this Ferriby side and they continueec to press for the goal that they deserved.

It finally came after 81 minutes. Peat’s free-kick from the half-way line was met by Denton on the far side of the area and the tall striker’s header looped over Timms and dropped under the bar and in at the far post.

Ferriby settled the game in the 90th minute with a goal that deserved to clinch any game. . King won the ball in his own half and his beautifully timed pass released Kendall on the right. He took the ball in his stride and advanced before curling a superb shot pat Timms and inside the far post.

Ferriby manager Billy Heath commented, “We managed the conditions well in both halves and we certainly had plenty of scoring opportunities, especially in the second-half. It did look to be heading for a draw and credit to Hyde for their defending. However, there is no denying that we deserved to win. The main thing is that we are in Monday’s draw.”
