Vanarama Conference North
North Ferriby United 1 Stockport County 1
Scorers: NFU: Tom Denton 15
Stockport: Chris Sharp 6
A draw was probably a fair result in an entertaining game that went from end-to-end. However, defences were generally on top throughout and there were few clear attempts on goal.
Manager Billy Heath had to juggle his resources again with Jamie Yates a late withdrawal from the side having aggravated an injury in the warm-up. The Villagers are struggling to find four fir defenders at the moment so it is credit to them for generally defending so well in this game.
Ferriby almost took a first minute lead. Adam Bolder’s corner was cleared as far as Russell Fry whose powerful 20-yard shot was parried by County keeper Danny Hurst who grabbed the ball at the second attempt.
Ferriby gifted an early Christmas present to County on six minutes. Robert Lofthouse crossed from the left and with Ferriby’s defenders all leaving the ball to each other Chris Sharp was able to bundle the ball over the line from almost on the goal-line.
Ferriby equalised after 15 minutes. Liam King fed Ryan Kendall who found Jason St Juste on the left. His cross was headed home at the far post by a stooping Tom Denton.
The Villagers came closest to scoring as the half went on. Ryan Kendall put a header and shot wide before hitting the inside of the post with a curling shot with virtually the final kick-of the half.
The second-half saw plenty of endeavour from both sides as the game swung from end-to-end but there was no real end product. Ferriby’s Adam Nicklin had to make the only save of the half when he held Chris Sharp’s low shot in the 80th minute.
Apart from that save there were only two off-target shots from each side as both midfields closed-down the opposition and defences dealt with anything that came through. Sharp and Lofthouse both missed the target for Stockport whilst Liam King shot wide and Tom Denton saw a header deflected for a corner.
Ferriby may have been suffering, to some extent, from the midweek trip to Boston for their successful FA Trophy replay win. Given that, and the changes to the team, this was a creditable performance from Ferriby against a strong and good side.
Manager Billy Heath commented, “We were a bit disjointed in our play today. That said, the players gave everything and we thoroughly deserved the point and with a bit of luck could have taken all three.”
