National League North
17 October 2015
North Ferriby United 1 FC United of Manchester 0 (Half-time: NFU 0 FCUM 0 )
Danny Clarke 90+1
Ferriby stole the points with an added-time goal from Danny Clarke. With the game seemingly destined to end goalless, Clarke challenged FC United keeper Dave Carnell for a through ball. Carnell’s attempted clearance hit Clarke and rebounded in to the empty goal.
The goal was a fair reward for Clarke’s effort and determination. He had closed down and harried the FC United defenders all afternoon. The win extends The Villagers’ unbeaten run to 15 games.
Both teams played good attacking football from the back. Danny Emerton and Curtis Bateson for Ferriby and Greg Daniels and Sam Madeley were prominent out wide and constantly probed the defences.
Despite this, goal chances were limited as both sides defended strongly with Ferriby’s Ash Palmer and FC’s Sam Sheridan leading their back-lines well.
FC threatened first with Madeley dipping a shot over the bar before Ferriby responded with Carnell just beating Clarke to a headed back-pass.
Mark Gray had a shot cleared just short of the line and Carnell saved high shots from Russ Fry and Clarke.
In-between those attempts, Ferriby keeper Adam Nicklin saved an angled shot from Madeley then turned a cross on to his own bar.
The second-half followed a similar pattern to the first. For Ferriby, Palmer saw his overhead kick saved and Clarke hit the rebound against Carnell.
Chris Lynch hit the Ferriby post when well-placed as FC United started to exert more pressure in the final 20 minutes. However, they still found it difficult to beat Ferriby’s defence. Their best opportunity saw Nicklin make a flying two-handed save to deny Tom Greaves.
That was perhaps the turning-point as United had no real opportunities after that. Clarke’s goal finally broke FC’s hearts. An end-to-end game could have gone either way and it perhaps needed that bit of luck to produce the winning goal.
Ferriby manager Billy Heath commented,
“This was another good performance. The players were fantastic. Danny Clarke deserved the goal. Some may say he was lucky but his chasing and determination forced the error and it was a good reward for him personally.
“We looked good going forward and defended well against a side that is dangerous going forward. The result shows the positive attitude that exists in this squad.”
