NFU 1 Chorley 2 (Evo Prem)

North Ferriby United 1-2 Chorley

Ferriby were unfortunate to taste opening day defeat as newly-promoted Chorley came out on top in a tight encounter at the Rapid Solicitors Stadium. In spite of having some of the better chances of the first half, the Villagers went a goal down just before the break, and a controversial penalty decision early in the second half put them two down before clawing one back through a penalty of their own.

Ferriby had the game's first opportunity when Paul Harsley's free kick was headed just wide at the far post by Mark Greaves, and Gary Bradshaw's shot on the turn from Russell Fry's through ball was later gathered by Chorley keeper Russell Saunders. Steve Foster posed a constant danger for the visitors, picking out the run of Dale Whitham into the box, who in turn fed Tom Ince, but Steve Wilson was easily able to gather the winger's effort. Another Foster assist had Chorley ahead a minute before the break, floating a cross squarely onto the head of his strike partner Chris Denham, whose looping effort left Wilson routed to the spot.

Chorley doubled their advantage three minutes into the second half, when the referee awarded a highly contentious penalty after Nathan Peat was adjudged to have brought down Jamie Vermiglio just inside the area, and Foster sent Wilson the wrong way from the spot. A deep cross from Mathew Stirland very nearly provided Bradshaw with the perfect opportunity to get Ferriby back in the game, and after Ince had lashed a half volley just over the bar for Chorley, Peat was unlucky to hit the post with a free kick. The deserved consolation finally came two minutes from time when Tom Walker pulled down Wayne Brooksby in the box and Harsley converted the penalty. Ferriby will aim to record their first points of the season when they travel to face FC United of Manchester at Stalybridge Celtic’s Bower Fold ground on Wednesday night.
