Leamington 2 North Ferriby United 2
Scorers NFU: Curtis Bateson 34; Jason St juste 69
Scorers Leamington: Danny Newton 44; Nathan Hicks 59
Ferriby ended their four game losing sequence with this draw that saw Leamington relegated from Conference North. The Villagers were punished for two defensive errors in a game that lacked any real excitement.
The home side opened with a strong wind at their backs but never really managed to make use of it. They played a largely long-ball game but regularly over-hit the ball which made defending reasonably comfortable for The Villagers.
Leamington had four goal attempts in the first 20 minutes but the only one on target was a weak shot by Lee Chilton which went straight to Ferriby keeper Jonathan Hedge.
Shortly after, Hedge did well to react quickly to take the ball just ahead of Richard Taundry as he latched on to Lee Moore’s cross.
Ferriby were struggling to put more than two passes together and it was the 28th minute before they offered a significant threat. A quick break ended with a last-ditch tackle denying Jason St Just as he was about to shoot.
This boosted Ferriby and they manged to exert some pressure on Leamington. A five man move ended with Curtis Bateson hitting a cross-shot wide of the far post. However, Bateson was not to be denied his first goal for the club. It came on 34 minutes when Jason St Juste turned and beat his defender before putting the ball inside for Bateson to score with a low shot.
Ferriby continued to press and Tom Denton placed a header to home keeper Jonny Maddison from a Josh Wilde free-kick.
Denton then had a goal disallowed with nobody, other than the referee, sure as to why. This let-off spurred Leamington into going forward again.
Hedge turned a low shot from Taundry round the post. Immediately afterwards, A Leamington cross was headed up into the air and slightly backwards by Denton. With Ferriby’s defence expecting Hedge to collect the ball, Danny Newton nipped in to head the equaliser over the keeper.
The wind dropped to some extent in the second-half. However, the quality of play did not improve. It was the 58th minute before the first goal attempt from either side. This saw Maddison produce a diving save to deny Liam King.
minute later and Leamington were ahead. Jordan Goddard’s weak 20-yard free-kick was spilled by Hedge at his right-hand post and Nathan Hicks lifted the ball over the prostrate keeper from a yard out with Ferriby’s defence slow to react.
Ferriby responded with a Matt Wilson header that went narrowly over befor squaring the game after 69 minutes. Wilde’s free-kick into the area was not cleared and after two shots were blocked the ball reached St Juste who fired home from 12 yards,
Leamington had a short spell of pressure which saw them gain a number of corners. From one of the, Wilde headed off the line.
Ferriby took control for a short time with another goal-mouth scramble seeing shots blocked before the ball was cleared. Denton had another header that went to Maddison.
Leamington looked for a goal in the final few minutes but their final attempt saw Newton’s header go to Hedge.
In some ways, this was better performance from Ferriby. Despite conceding two poor goals, the defence played reasonablywell for the most part. The midfiled struggled to make significant impact, especially in the first-half, but to some extent this was due to Leamington’s mainly long-ball game.
Ferriby assistant manager Mark Carroll commented, “It was good to stop the losing run. However conceding the goal just on half-time gave them some momentum. Once again we were punished for a our mistakes.”
