FA Youth Cup

Ist Round Proper
NFU 1  Morecambe 2

The Young Villagers were were shown how cruel football can be. A spirited second-half performance had seen them draw level with Morecambe. However a goal deep in added time saw Morecambe through by the narrowest of margins.

The first-half was dominated by Morecambe who really should have led by more than one goal at the interval. They hit the underside of the bar, saw a goal=bound shot cleared just short of the line and had no end of efforts on James Wilkinson’s goal.

Despite all their pressure, it was Ferriby who could have taken the lead. Nathan Mist’s flicked header found Mitchell Levi-Lewis. However Morecambe keeper Max Povey came out quickly to block Levi-Lewis’s shot.

Morecambe eventually took the lead they deserved when Morgan homson-Smith fired home a low shot from 20 yards after 40 minutes.

The second-half was a much more even affair with Ferriby giving as good as they got. They certainly deserved their equaliser after 57 minutes when Joe Holmes headed home at the near post.

The game was an end-to-end affair with Morecambe looking more threatening and creating more opportunities. With the game seemingly destined for extra-time, Homson Smith fired home his second goal in the 93rd minute.

The timing of the goal was cruel but overall, Morecambe deserved their win. There was no disgrace in this defeat for Ferriby. They palyed with skill and determination against a side of young professionals.

Manager Rich Bell commented,

”We rode our luck in the first-half when we could have concede more. However, we turned it round in the second-half and certainly deserved the equaliser. It was hard to concede the winner so late but the players did themselves proud and can hold their heads high.”

This was an excellent all round team performance which was a credit to the players and management. Nathan Mist scored 2 very fine goals, the first when he robbed the Guiseley centre half and he beat the goalkeeper from  just inside the penalty area, his second was even better, again robbing the centre half about 30 yards from goal placed an unstoppable shot over the keeper and just under the crossbar.
The Ferriby defence held out with an incredible  work rate and left Guiseley at a loss as to what to do to break them down. A very well deserved victory.
