Stockport County 1 North Ferriby United 2
Scorers: NFU: Anthony Wilson 20, 66
Stockport: Phil Jevons 84
The Villagers sunned Stockport with this win at Edgeley Park. A few years ago a game between the two sides would have been seen as a complete mismatch but not any longer.
Ferriby secured a two goal lead midway through the second-half but had to withstand a nervy final 10 minutes when County pulled one back with six minutes of normal time left.
The opening ten minutes were a bit scrappy as both side struggled to find any real rhythm. Ferriby had the first half-chance after 13 minutes but home keeper Ian Ormson just beat Liam King to a through-ball.
Anthony Wilson gave Ferriby the lead after 20 minutes. He outjumped the County defence in the six-yard box to head home Jamie Yates’ right-wing corner.
Ferriby played the better football and were the more threatening side as the half progressed. Another Yates’ corner was punched away by Ormson who then saved from both Anthony and Matt Wilson.
County found it hard to cope with the approach play of Yates, Danny Clarke, Nathan Jarman and Anthony Wilson.
Ferriby won the midfield battle and defended strongly to deny stockport any real goal opportunities. Ferriby keeper Adam Nicklin had only one save to make in the first and that was not until the 43rd minute when he turned Gregg Anderson’s header over the bar.
County won two corners in the first two minutes of the second-half but failed to get a shot on target. They continued to press but, as in the first-half, Ferriby’s defence and midfield ruled the roost and County were forced into errors.
Ferriby again took control as the half progressed and increased their lead on 66 minutes. Wilson latched on to a pass controlled the ball and turned a defender tw or three times as he worked himself the space to fire home a low shot from 18 yards.
Ormson saved twice from Wilson as he looked for his and Ferriby’s third goal. Good work by Clarke say Yates’ shot partially blocked by a defender as it went through to Ormson.
County had offered little threat with no on-target attempts. Nicklin was alert enough to beat Liam Dickinson to the ball on the edge of the area.
It was a little surprising when County pulled a goal back after 84 minutes. The ball found Phil Jevons on the edge of the area and his shot gave Nicklin no chance.
Stockport pressed for an equaliser in the final 10 minutes of play but managed only one shot on target with substitute Adriano Moke shooting straight at Nicklin.
Wilson was denied by Ormson when the keeper beat him to a through-ball
County’s fans were clearly unhappy with this defeat but they were beaten by the better team on the day,
Ferriby played the better football and were more committed than County. This was a fine all-round team performance by Ferriby and demonstrates just how far the club has progressed over recent years.
Manager Billy Heath commented, “I thought we were superb today. A 2-1 win does not really do justice to our performance. The whole team played well. We had bit of a blip a few games ago but are now back to our best.”
