Evostik Northern Premier League Doodson Sport League Challenge Cup Semi-Final
North Ferriby United 2 Cammell Laird 1
Holders Ferriby reached the Final of the Doodson Sport League Challenge Cup after a hard-fought game against Cammell Laird.
Ferriby Manager Billy Heath made eight changes from Monday's starting line-up at Blyth in order to give pitch time to players in his squad.
Cammell displayed a positive approach to the game and will no doubt feel unlucky to have lost. They took the game to Ferriby from the start and Antonu Pecora thwarted laird's Joe Holt on the edge of the area after just 6 minutes.
Cammell continued to attack, often with long balls aimed at Holt whose speed caused problems all evening.
However, it was Ferriby who took the lead with their first real opportunity after 19 minutes. Ryan Williams' left-wing corner was met at the far post by Mark Gray who thundered a header past keeper Kevin Atherton.
Clear opportunities were few and far between for both times as the half continued. Jay Foleyy shot wide for the visitors. Williams did the same for Ferriby before having a shot saved. Wilson saw a header held by Atherton.
Foley's shot was held at the second attempt by Pecora then Holt shot wide following a misuderstainding between Steve Ridley and Pecora.
Laird finally got the equaliser they deserved deep into added time at the end of the first half. Danny O'Brien's cross was headed home by Chay Dysart who reached the ball just ahead of Pecora.
The second-half followed a similar pattern to the first with half-chances at each end. Steve Ferrigan, Joe Gilru Dysart and had opportunities for the visitors but their shots lacked power and direction.
Ferriby felt they should have had a penalty when Gary Bradshaw was brought down in the area after 73 minutes but the referee decided otherwise.
This spurred Ferriby and Bradshaw fired over from 16 yards. The winning goal came after 81 minutes. Bradshaw's shot was blocked by Atherton but Wilson was on hand to shoot across goal and put the ball in the far top corner.
Laird refused to lie down and Mike Grogan saw a shot deflected on to the post as they looked for an equaliser.
Ferriby held out for what may have been a slightly fortuitous win but they showed their character and spirit once again.
Heath commented, "I'm obviously pleased with the result. It's great to reach the Final for the second year running. We didn't play at our best this evening and Cammell Laird showed a lot of enthusiasm."
