Saturday 26 October 2013
North Ferriby United 1 Alfreton Town 3
NFU: Nathan Jarman 15
Alfreton Town: Jake Speight 39; John Akinde 65; John McGrath 90+4
Ferriby’s cup dream is over for another year but not without giving their higher-ranked a few scares. It was an entertaining game with Ferriby matching Alfreton throughout the game.
Alfreton started the brighter and Ferriby keeper Adam Nicklin made two good saves in the first five minutes from John Akinde and Tom Shaw.
Ferriby replied with efforts from Mat Wilson and Anthony Wilson.
The Villagers side gradually began to get on top. Jamie Yates’ crosses proved a handful for Alfreton all afternoon. One was deflected for a corner from which Yates found Gregg Anderson whose shot was cleared off the line by Josh Law. Another Yates cross saw Ant Wilson headed just wide.
Nathan Jarman put Ferriby ahead after 15 minutes. A Jamie Yates’ corner was cleared back to Yates and this time his cross found Jarman whose header gave Town keeper Ross Atkins no chance. Matt Wilson then drew a fine two-handed save from Atkins.
Alfreton gradually worked themselves back into the game. Jake Speight curled a free-kick over the bar before Nicklin made a double save from Law and Speight.
Speight equalised after 39 minutes when he latched on to Shaw’s through-ball to fire high past Nicklin. The keeper got a hand to the ball but could not quite turn it round the post.
The half finished with Jarman having a goal correctly ruled out for off-side.
The second-half followed a similar pattern. Ant Wilson’s cross from the right was dummied by Yates but Liam King fired over from 12 yards. Another teasing cross from Yates was headed just wide by Jarman.
Alfreton’s main threats came from long balls played to Akinde and he saw one shot well-saved by Nicklin. He finally found the net in the 69th minutes when a low shot found its way through a crowd of players and in to the goal.
Nicklin held Akinde’s shot before saving well from John McGrath following a quick break by Speight and danield Bradley.
Anderson’s header from another Yates cross went just over as Ferriby looked for the equaliser.
The crucial third goal came deep in stoppage time when a break involving Speight and Daniel Bradley ended with John McGrath curling the ball in from the edge of the area.
Ferriby Manager Billy Heath commented, “We did very well today and more than matched Alfreton. The real difference was that they took their chances and it won them the game.”
Alfreton Manager Nicky Law commented, “We did not play at our best today but I’m obviously pleased with the result. Credit to Ferriby as they made life difficult for us.”
Ferriby probably played the better football but the real difference between the two sides was in taking chances. Ferriby were obviously disappointed with the result but the players can hold their heads up after a stirring performance.
