North Ferriby United 0 Leeds United 2
Marcus Antonsson 18; Kemar Roofe 57
Ferriby could take a lot of pride from this game against Championship side Leeds United. Although Leeds dominated the game and could have won by a bigger margin, Ferriby made life hard for them.
The Villagers had to work hard in midfield and defence throughout the game but they were determined and displayed a great deal of character.
“We can take a lot of positives from the game,” said manager Steve Housham. “The players were not overawed and showed their ability. It was a really good work-out from a physical point of view.”
It was actually Ferriby who almost opened the scoring after four minutes. Bobby Johnson’s free-kick was met by Jake Skelton at the far post where the defender headed narrowly over.
Leeds began to exert a large degree of control and Marcus Antonsson was thwarted twice by Ross Durrant. Antonsson atoned after 18 minutes when he was played through and slid the ball past Durrant in a one-on-one.
Durrant produced a superb reaction save from a header by Kemar Roofe as Leeds continued to threaten.
Skelton and Jake Picton did sterling job at the centre of the Ferriby defence and Russell Fry and Simon Russell were combative in midfield. Joel Ambalu and Alberto caused some problems for the Leeds defenders when Ferriby did manage to get forward.
Leeds continued to dominate throughout the second-half but created fewer chances. The game was rather more disjointed with both sides making a large number of changes as the half progressed
Roofe clinched the game after 57 minutes though Ferriby did dispute his goal. He crashed in a shot from 25 yards that bounced down off the underside of the bar. The officials deemed it had crossed the line with Ferriby’s defence claiming otherwise.
Substitute keeper Lewis Exall produced an amazing reaction save to deny Madjer Gomes a goal shortly before the end.
