Matlock Town 3-0 North Ferriby United
North Ferriby’s torrid September ended with a sixth straight league defeat on the road at Matlock Town, who grabbed two first half goals and kept a resurgent Villagers at bay in the second period.
There was little to do for either goalkeeper in the opening ten minutes, Matlock striker Ian Holmes coming closest to creating an opening when he played a dangerous ball across goal that Sam Denton had to blast clear for a corner. Having nearly taken the lead in the 24th minute, Ferriby found themselves behind just seconds later. Sam Mulready hooked his shot just over the bar from Paul Harsley’s knock-on, and from the following goal kick Liam King played in Holmes to lob Steve Wilson from the edge of the area and give Matlock the lead. Wilson prevented a second for the hosts on the half hour mark when he blocked Kris Bowler’s effort and saw the follow-up deflected out. The second did arrive five minutes before the break, Micky Harcourt sliding the ball across to King, who launched a 30-yard piledriver into the top corner. Ferriby nearly pulled one back just before the break, Paul Harsley’s free kick played in Greg Wright but Matlock keeper Jon Kennedy was able to save with his legs.
Instantly sharper in both defence and attack, Ferriby nearly punished some Matlock carelessness early in the second half when Gary Bradshaw pounced on a ball back to Kennedy, forcing him to catch at close quarters. At the other end, a long ball from Adam Yates picked out Tyeisse Nightingale in the box, and Wilson used his legs to turn the midfielder’s effort around the post. Ferriby sub Mathew Stirland forced Kennedy into his best save of the night as his dive pushed away the winger’s curling effort, and the end-to-end action continued when Denton turned a goal-bound effort from King away for a corner. New Ferriby recruit Tom Clarke, a former York City youngster, came off the bench and provided a cross which Nathan Peat turned into the path of Bradshaw at the far post, but he headed wide. Matlock grabbed a somewhat flattering third goal in stoppage time, when Holmes blasted into the bottom corner after a solo run.
