Vanarama National League North 16/02/2016
Hednesford Town 1 (Payne 19 mins)
North Ferriby United 1 (King penalty 90+4 mins)
A 94th minute penalty from captain Liam King salvaged a point for the Villagers in a scrappy game that neither side deserved to win. With seconds remaining a Josh Wilde long throw fell to Tom Denton whose vicious goal bound volley was blocked by the arm of Digie. King stepped up and smashed the ball straight down the middle as Crane dived to his right to level the scores.
Clarke and Brooksby looked lively in the early stages, both players had shots blocked and Ash Palmer had a goal bounded effort blocked from Russell Fry’s free kick. Hednesford’s best moments came from the lively Payne on the left wing so it was something of a surprise when a right wing cross led to the first goal. Adam Thomas cross was dropped by an under pressure Nicklin and fell to Payne who opened the scoring in the nineteenth minute.
An out of form Hednesford had something to hang on to and a scrappy game ensued. There were few clear cut chances created as both keepers had a relatively quite evening. Hednesford’s main threat came from the pace of substitute Obeng but he was well marshalled by Wilde and Palmer. Wilde’s overlapping runs looked like Ferriby’s main threat but it looked like the Villagers were going to draw a blank. The closest was a Bateson shot that was deflected narrowly wide with Crane wrong footed in the Hednesford goal. As the game went into stoppage time The Villagers had their best moments, Bateson went in one and one with the keeper but his drive was saved, a Denton header drifted wide and a Bolder shot flew over. That looked to have been Ferriby’s last opportunity but with Hednesford’s time wasting tactics there was time for one last attack that led to a dramatic finale.
