East Riding Senior Cup 2nd Round
Driffield EI 1 NFU 4
Sam Ansu (2), Nathan Davies, Tom Davie
A very young Ferriby Team ran out worthy winners in the 2nd Round of the East Riding County FA Senior Cup.
Ferriby started well and came closest in the early stages as the game went end to end in a frenetic first 15 minutes. The breakthrough came midway through the first half when Ben Naylor won the ball on the edge of his own area and played an early ball up to George Bell just inside the Driffield half, he held it up well before turning and delivering a superb ball which split the Driffield defence open and winger Nathan Davies was onto it in a flash and finished well to put the Villagers 1-0 up.
Driffield responded and had a good 10 minute spell and forced James Wilkinson into two good saves, but it was the youngsters who increased their lead with a quick move down the left between the busy Daniel Sidwell and Ben Naylor who again fed into in to Bell who dropped the ball off to Sam Ansu just inside the box and he drove first time into the bottom corner of the net to put Ferriby 2-0 up at half time.
Driffield came came out guns blazing and should have levelled but for Wilkinson who made three terrific saves to deny them. Ferriby finally settled and found their feet again and were unlucky not to increase their lead, but it was Driffield who pulled a goal back when the ball was delivered to the back post and headed in despite a blatant push on Naylor.
Driffield were now in the ascendancy but Ferriby dug in and defended brilliantly with Eddie Lee, Will Clark and Dom Brown standing firm in front of Wilkinson who was having an outstanding game. Harvey Spence who captained the Ferriby team in the absence of Steve Richardson was dogged in the centre of midfield all game and along with Luke Jacob began to grip the midfield areas again. With Bell and Ansu working tirelessly up front, gaps began to open up again and Ferriby got the third decisive goal when after good build up play the ball broke in the area to Tom Davie who finished with a low left footed strike.
With time running out Driffield threw men forward but Ferriby hit them on the break and Ansu was onto the through ball and flicked the ball past the onrushing Driffield keeper to put the tie beyond any doubt. This was an outstanding performance by the North Ferriby youngsters.
